Christmas Decorations This Season

Deck The Halls With Boughs Of Holly…Or Woodland Creatures?

A major part of Christmas is decorating our homes and putting up the Christmas tree, decked with lights and baubles. So, do we decorate our homes so that the colours of our decorations seamlessly blend into our décor schemes, do we dust-off the old faithful decorations from the loft or do we actually follow Christmas trends? Nicky Percival Interior Design, based in Tunbridge Wells looks at the trends for this Christmas, which we hope will inspire and tempt you.

Woodland and Forest Themes

Conjure up the beauty and magic of British woodlands by creating a forest scene featuring animal and bird decorations, ranging from squirrels, deer, foxes, hedgehogs and mice to robins and owls against a backdrop of natural greenery including sprays of pine, fir and spruce with fir cones, branches, logs and feathers as well as toadstools and mushrooms.

Trending colours are bright jades, soft sages and emerald greens and there are also decorative lights to accentuate your forest wonderland, with leaf inspired themes and reindeers designs. You can probably imagine that you are walking through a forest with crisp snow underfoot and the aromas of marshmallows toasting on a roaring fire.

Jewels and Metallic Accents

Deep jewel tones and metallic accents are really in and will certainly add a touch of opulence and glamour with their gold and copper hues. Copper, rose gold and bronze have become very popular tones in interior design, so if this is your colour scheme, there should be plenty of baubles to add a touch of decadence, luxury and sophistication. Glitz and glamour are all the rage and look out for those jewel encrusted baubles.

Another theme that shows no sign of going away is classic red and white, which originated in the Nordic countries. You can recreate your own Scandinavian cabin feel in your own home. Mix red baubles with classic white against a background of spruce and fir. You can even add rustic elements and use classic patterns such as plaids and checks and there are even complimentary baubles with a tartan Highland trend. The iconic nutcracker is a prominent character this year – so why not add him to your classic scene?

Paper Decorations

Paper decorations are very popular this year in colours ranging from muted autumnal tones through green, peach and white as well as crazy bright and neon colours. And, if your taste is to make a loud statement, there are some amazing bright tropical baubles depicting toucans, flamingos, llamas and unicorns. You could say it’s kitsch, but as long as it makes you and your guests smile, why not?

Be Creative With Mono Colour Schemes

Mono colour schemes are always a safe bet, so fill your home with gold, white or silver. Get creative with paint and glitter and spray holly, flowers and twigs in your chosen colour. You could even have a go at making a wreath from fir, spruce, cones, thistles and holly.

We’re really excited about this year’s Xmas decorations, as they are rather wonderful. Is it time for you to invest in some new baubles and sparkles?
